kopitareva gradina, beograd, serbia. gradina means something like a city playground, although many different opinions exist about it. it contains the term “grad”, meaning city in its name so its function is essentially urban. even though it is located within the 5 minutes walk from the downtown this square still remains unknown to most city’s residents. it is hidden and that is what makes it unique and very precious. it has preserved the original atmosphere of the city from the end of 19 century, very unusual in a city that was bombed numerous times, the last time in 1999. in 2007 facades are redone, greenery was rejuvenated, new light fixtures are on their way to be installed and according to the locals complete repaving is planned. excellent example how poor countries, like serbia at this moment, can find resources and understanding by city officials for ambient preservation. really pleasant surprise.
